Mentoring and Coaching

Mentoring and Coaching

This service is especially geared to colleges or universities that do not have enough dedicated staff to help faculty learn and use effective pedagogy or learn how to assess student learning outcomes. When faculty members use such pedagogy, they help improve student learning outcomes.

Department-wide coaching and 1:1 consultations  can be a cost-effective way to offer quality faculty development and can be noted on accreditation self-studies.

I can be available on a part-time such as 1 day a month  to work with faculty individually or as a group or with  committees.

Since we are working remotely, I can be available to work with faculty around the world and there are no travel costs.

Coaching and Mentoring Possibilities Include:

  • Onboarding new faculty so they will teach effectively from the start
  • 1:1 consultations with faculty and administrators
  • Teaching improvement
  • How to scaffold difficult material and high stakes assessments
  • Scholarship of Teaching and Learning
  • Implementing teaching innovations
  • Helping  struggling faculty to teach better
  • Collaborating on Scholarship of Teaching, Learning and Assessment
  • Curriculum review, revision and development
  • Design of effective assessments
  • Using data to close the assessment loop

What faculty have said about how Phyllis helped them:

  • "Your legacy lives on in our department each semester as we teach, engage, research the  Scholarship of Teaching and Learning."
  • "You have inspired  me as an educator to not settle for the mediocre."
  • "You were instrumental to my growth, development as a teacher and administrator.  I am forever grateful. " "You pushed me to do things better, to challenge assumptions, and to consider new approaches."
  • "Your guidance during my growth was/is greatly appreciated. I would not be the teacher or researcher without your guidance.  You impacted many careers."
  • "Thank you so much for your help, guidance, wisdom, patience, and dedication to me, faculty and students."
  • "Thank you for helping an overwhelmed, but zealous practitioner develop into a competent and, dare I say 'dynamic' educator."
  • "I am lucky to have had the opportunity to pick your brain regarding teaching and learning, specifically related to student assessments, rubric development, and student assignments. your knowledge and wisdom has been invaluable."

What a  dean said about how helpful the part-time but long-term interaction meant to her college:

"Without your guidance, my college would not be as strong. You had a large part in shaping many of the faculty, who in turn shaped many students. your impact will be felt for a long time."
